Mulled Wine for the Floridian

Last week we all would have welcomed a warm glass of spicy mulled wine. But this week, with temperatures tiptoeing into the 80s, that’s the last thing on our minds. However, today is National Mulled Wine Day, and at ABC, we like to celebrate.

But instead of serving up a cozy cocktail, why not make something a little more refreshing—we’ll leave the warm and fuzzies to our northern neighbors. We’ve got air conditioners to turn on and mouths to cool down. Today, let’s celebrate National Mulled Wine Day with iced mulled wine.

1              750mL bottle Pinot NoirIced Mulled wine

¼ c          Sugar

10           Whole cloves, dried

2              Oranges, sliced

2              Cinnamon sticks

1              Vanilla bean, cut in half

2 T          Cointreau

Optional: sliced strawberries and 2 tablespoons of brandy

In a saucepan, gently heat and stir wine, sugar, orange slices, cinnamon and vanilla bean. Just before the mixture boils, remove it from the heat and let cool. Add Cointreau and brandy (if desired). Stir until well mixed. Refrigerate until chilled, about two hours, or until you can’t stand it anymore.

Serve in tumblers filled with ice. Garnish with orange slices, cinnamon sticks and sliced strawberries (if desired).
