The Eagle has landed

As with any trip getting there is half the battle. I am glad to report that we faced little difficulties or delays in our journey to Central America. Both flights were tediously uneventful.

Upon arrival in Managua we all made a quick visit to the duty-free shop. Big surprise, a bunch of folks from ABC Fine Wine & Spirits loading up on libations before we headed out of the city on our 2 and half hour drive to Estelí.

My companions on this trip are certainly a “motley crew” of individuals. David Larue, Rick Hughes, Katherine Mason, Cindy Feirerra, Mackenzie Ladd, Brett Hallenbeck, and of course yours truly all made the trip this year. For everyone except me, this was their first trip to Nicaragua and we couldn’t have gotten things off to a better start. We stopped at the best steakhouse in the country and enjoyed a delicious flank steak smothered in chimichurri sauce.

nicaBlog1The ride to Estelí was actually very pleasant. I chose to measure it in the number of cigars I smoked rather than how many seconds ticked off the clock. A wise choice on my part, since it ended up being a two and a half cigar trek. There were also a few beers thrown in there for good measure.nicaPost3

Our gracious tour guide, Henry, gave us a great history lesson on his native country during the ride. He was very colorful in his explanation of the historic events that shaped this beautiful part of Nicaragua. If all high school teachers were as good as this guy more kids would definitely stay awake in History Class.

We enjoyed a few cigars before having an excellent dinner followed by another after dinner cigar or two. My total cigar intake for the day included a Liga Privada, a Herrera Esteli, a Norteno, a T-52, and a Feral Pig for dessert.

It was an amazing first day and I can’t wait to see what day two will bring.
