Aha…one of my favorite times of the year has arrived. I’m not talking about St. Patrick’s Day although I’m certainly not opposed to enjoying a Black & Tan with a shot of Irish whiskey (just no car bombs please). No, I’m talking about what happens in the wine world this time of year. This is the season for many of the world’s biggest and most influential wine trade shows.
The U.G.C. (Bordeaux, France) tastings, Prowein (Dusseldorf, Germany) and Vinitaly (Verona, Italy) all take place within days of each other. I’m delighted that ABC has once again asked me to attend the 49th edition of Vinitaly, March 22-25, in Verona.
Vinitaly is regarded as one of the preeminent trade shows in the wine world. This year, 148,000 visitors are expected to turn out. Attendees include distributors, wholesalers, importers, bars, restaurants, sommeliers, the trade press and serious retailers like ABC Fine Wine & Spirits. It will be four days of non-stop meetings, tastings, workshops and events designed to encourage contacts between exhibitors and those of us in the trade. For anyone who thinks I’m going on vacation, I would love to invite you along for just one day.
Ok I’ll admit there are worse places you can be. Verona is one of my favorite Italian cities. The spectacular array of ancient Roman and Medieval architecture within the old city is captivating. I keep telling myself that one day I will return to Verona when I can enjoy exploring this wonderful city. From the enormous Roman amphitheater erected in the 1st century AD to Piazza Della Erbe, home of the Forum in Roman times to taking a stroll down Via Mazzini. One of these days I’m going to make it happen.
I’ll be accompanied by our fine wine buyer Brad Lewis. At the conclusion of Vinitaly we plan on visiting a few wineries that I’ll be sure to report about in my upcoming blog post. Until then, arrivederci!
