Spanish Imports, Torres Wines

Torres, a leader in the Spanish wine industry, has a mission statement you’ll fall in love with. “We work to make better moments for the wine lovers. 145 years ago, we started with a small winery and a few vineyards close to Barcelona, and since then we have never stopped dreaming that we could make top world class wines. We will keep working to produce better wines and to keep our promises in every bottle.”

During our breakfast tasting session, Miguel Torres Maczassek, Torres Group’s general manager, told many charming stories, but he also mentioned that they make the theory of “less production per hectare = higher concentrations”  work in their favor. He said, “Although in the nineties we were all focused on reducing yields and increased concentration, experience has showed to us that this is not necessary the best.

The key is to find a good balance in the vineyard, and this depends on the climate, soils, variety and the human work behind it.  Trying to stress a vine too much will not make better wines. Our philosophy is to better understand what each vineyard can offer us. Understanding nature usually leads to better wines.

In single vineyards like Mas la Plana in the Penedes, we practice organic viticulture. We allow grass to grow between the rows and we do not green harvest anymore. After 50 years the vineyards have reached a great balance thanks to the deep roots of the vines and balance in the ecosystem.”

It also doesn’t hurt that their Sangre De Toro is a fabulous wine at an even better price. With a deep ruby color, its rich complexity delivers Mediterranean aromas with exuberant notes of spices and blackberries. Velvety tannins are noted on the palate with elegant flavors of licorice and small dark forest fruits.883305 We also carry their brandy, Torres 10 Imperial Brandy Gran Reserva. It is dark amber in color, with fading gold tints on the edges. It’s quite intense on the nose with warm hints of cinnamon and vanilla. On the palate it is round and rich, developing towards a lush and lingering after taste.

When I asked him why people must drink their wine he answered simply, “In general I think wine brings positive things to people because wine touches our senses, creates emotions and makes people enjoy life just a little more.” We couldn’t agree more.
