Celebrate Cinco

Cinco de Mayo is the holiday that really launches spring into summer—not only does it come in a month of college graduations and the eagerly anticipated arrival warm weather, but it is without a doubt the most colorful and celebrated of all holidays. Brightly hued margaritas, brazen beer labels, eye-catching snacks and patterned attire are a must for any good Cinco de Mayo fiesta—hang a piñata if you really want to get your amigos in the fiesta mood.

And as it is consistently on the list of the top five drinking holidays (ranked fourth behind St. Patrick’s Day, Carnival and Oktoberfest), it is our duty to take your party from a snooze-fest siesta to a muy bueno fiesta in just two steps.

Step One:  The Margarita

Go traditional or go Sicilian. Either way, what you’ll need at the most basic level is citrus (grapefruit, orange), tequila and an abundance of limes.

Check out this video for a step-by-step on the Sicilian margarita. It’s super refreshing, colorful and just right for a Tuesday edition of Cinco de Mayo.

Step Two:  The Snacks

Guacamole and salsaNaturally you’ll need a big batch of guac and a bowlful of spicy salsa to get you through the night. But since Cinco de Mayo falls on Taco Tuesday this year–can you imagine a better pairing?–we suggest making a big batch of taco meat with all the fixins.

Try these rum-glazed shrimp tacos or this honey lime tequila version. Both are zesty and fresh and will pair nicely with your homemade margaritas. Of course, there’s always slow-cooked beer and salsa verde chicken tacos or the crispy beer-battered fish version. Both would be nice with a light beer and lots of toppings.
