Finca Copete back in stock (and still delicious)

I’m prefacing this post with a disclaimer: do not file under “new additions” to our ABC Fine Wine & Spirits wine portfolio.  I’ll admit that I’ve fallen into the practice recently of just heralding the new releases available at our stores.  So allow me to change the trajectory a bit and reintroduce a brand that’s been a steady favorite of our staff and guests, yet has seemingly been out of stock for an eon or two.

The brand I’m alluding to is Finca Copete, produced by Bodegas y Vinedos O. Fournier in Argentina.  The man behind the label is the dynamic Jose Manuel Ortega Gil-Fournier, who also produces award-winning wines in Chile, the Douro of Portugal and his hometown region of Ribera del Duero in Spain.  Finca Copete is an entry-level release for the bodega, yet the resulting wines assuredly over-deliver on quality for their price point.

The red wines of Finca Copete come from Mendoza’s Uco Valley, specifically the prime sub-appellation of La Consulta.  The fruit is all handpicked from high-elevation vineyards (3600 feet), fermented in stainless steel and aged three months in French oak barrels.

We presently have the Finca Copete Malbec ($13) and 50/50 red blend, Finca Copete Malbec/Tempranillo ($13) in select stores.  Both reds offer densely packed, juicy black fruit with plenty of personality and varietal character.  Think as the Argentines do and serve with a thick steak off the grill.

The one white wine in the lineup may be the best overall value.  The Finca Copete Torrontes ($12) hallmarks the tropical fruits (think pineapple, mango and citrus) and refreshing profile this underrated grape is noted for.  The fruit is sourced well north of Mendoza in Cafayate at nearly 6000 feet.  Any doubt Argentina is home to some of the highest vineyards on planet earth?

Serve this zesty dry white with pan seared diver scallops and lemon butter sauce.
