Wines that pay homage or respect to a family or founding member are usually something special. The whole point of the exercise of course is to do honor to an important and much-loved person with an exceptional limited or special edition wine. Such is the case with Alfredo from Nugan Estate in Australia, now available at ABC Fine Wine & Spirits.
Alfredo Nugan emigrated to Australia from his native Spain in 1939 and a year later founded a fruit and vegetable packing business in Riverina. The business grew and was successful and following Alfredo’s retirement in 1965 has remained in the Nugan family. The 1980s saw amazing growth and they became the largest exporter of niche juice products to Asia. The third generation of the family diversified into the wine business (hence the name of their ‘Third Generation’ line of wines) with the result that Nugan is now one of Australia’s top 20 wine exporters. The family owns five vineyards – in King Valley, McLaren Vale and Riverina – and also sources grapes from top vineyards in Coonawarra.
Alfredo is sourced from the family’s premium vineyards in Riverina and McLaren Vale. A select parcel of Shiraz is harvested and dried to create greater flavor intensity and concentration. After fermentation the wine remains on its skins for five days before maturation in French and American oak for 12 months.
The wine itself is exceptional.
Tasting notes: “Dense garnet with a crimson hue. Attractive aromas of cherry and plum with dark chocolate, earth and herbaceous notes. Warm rich and complex palate layered with black cherry with savory nuances and smooth velvety tannins.”
This delicious wine was awarded 92 points from Stephen Tanzer who writes, “Sappy, smoke-accented cherry and blackcurrant flavors linger on the fruit dominated finish, which is framed by smooth velvety tannins.”
There can be no doubt that Alfredo – the wine as well as its namesake – is a winner.
