It seems as if fate played a hand here. When world class golfer and 2001 and 2004 US Open Champion Retief ‘The Goose’ Goosen was looking to begin the process of producing his own wine, he came across at a farm in the Outeniqua Mountains, in the Eastern Cape of his native South Africa. For over a hundred years the property had been known as ‘Ganzekrall’ which translates as ‘Goose Enclosure.’ It was here, in the remote area of the Upper-Langkloof Valley, less than 10 miles from the Indian Ocean, that he and business partner Dr. Werner Roux formed The Goose Wines. Oddly enough, a flock of Spur-Winged Geese moved into the area shortly afterward.
Cabernet Sauvignon was planted in 1999, followed by Shiraz in 2000 and Sauvignon Blanc in 2002.
Situated 2,500 feet above sea level, the Upper-Langkloof Valley is known for its dry and cool climate, which allows late season ripening and proves perfect for growing grapes that show great elegance and classic structure. The terroir is Table Mountain sandstone and shale.
The flagship wine, The Goose ‘Expression’ is now available at ABC Fine Wine & Spirits in the 2008 vintage. For this wine only the best performing rows of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz from single-vineyard blocks are chosen. The wine is unfiltered and unfined, and matured in French oak for 12-18 months. The percentages differ vintage to vintage but the 2008 is comprised of 67% Shiraz and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Expression has been received very well by wine lovers throughout the world and will appeal both to lovers of fine Old World reds and California Cabs. It has won numerous international awards and was commended by the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards.
The wine itself is full-bodied, complex and sophisticated. It shows black cherries on the nose, is velvet structured and soft on the palate, with subtle tannins, and pairs perfectly with any heavy rich meat dish.
Don’t miss this one!
