Château Daugay Wine Dinner

Earlier in the month, select guests of ABC Fine Wine & Spirit (foodies and oenophiles alike) had a unique opportunity to dine and taste wine with Bordeaux château owner Jean-Bernard Grenié at IM Tapas Restobar in Naples.  Five vintages of Monsieur Grenié’s signature Chateau Daugay Saint-Émilion Grand Cru were paired with a delectable four-course tasting menu created by Chefs Isabel Pozo Polo and Mary Shipman.

Jean-Bernard’s visit to Naples was part of a multi-city swing leading up to en primeur week in Bordeaux. The morning of our wine dinner had him arriving on the red-eye from Dallas, sporting his new ten-gallon hat.

Jean-Bernard is recognized throughout the wine world as part-owner of Château Angelus, the prestigious Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé “A”.  Back in 2006, he and his wife Hélène de Bouard were charged with the management of Château Daugay. The estate comprises 5.5 hectares planted to a single block on Saint-Émilion’s southern slope.  Vineyard composition is roughly fifty-percent Merlot, forty-percent Cabernet Franc and ten-percent Cabernet Sauvignon, grown on the appellation’s hallmark clay-limestone and sandy-limestone sub-soils.  The château uses only organic farming practices and annual production is a tiny 2000 cases.BLog

The affable Jean-Bernard was delighted with the reception and attendees were excited to sample the 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011 and 2012 releases.  Chefs Mary and Isabel produced a Bordeaux friendly menu with Catalan and Castilian accents including seared foie gras with persimmon and green apple, sous-vide Albondigas (a classic, Spanish tapa), crispy duck confit with savory spinach Catalana and sliced rack of wild boar with a cranberry chestnut compote.

ABC Fine Wine & Spirits staff members skillfully provided the wine service throughout the evening.  Lending a hand were Wine & Spirits Specialists Stephen Simms, Brenton Rankine, Teresa Norton, Richard Gowar, Store Managers Kevin Vercrouse, Jon Brimmer and Regional Manager Mike McBride.

A special thanks to Jean-Bernard, chefs Mary and Isabel, and our local Naples team for a truly memorable event.
