If you are a fan of the wines of California, you have much to look forward to this coming fall at ABC Fine Wine & Spirits. For the month of May, ABC’s wine team visited numerous wineries in the Napa and Sonoma regions, seeking out hidden gems of all varietals and styles. The end result is what we are confident will be one of the finest selections of boutique wines from California’s North Coast to be offered by any retailer in the state of Florida.
We recently retried many of these finds, and while all were outstanding, there were three that stood out as personal favorites that I cannot wait to introduce to our California red fans.
First up; a blend from Vin Roc called RWT. Self-described as “the vintner’s blend’s little brother” of their flagship Cabernet, this 288 case production Bordeaux-style Cabernet-based blend was silky smooth, with soft tannins and bold flavors of dark fruit for balance.
My next standout was a Stag’s Leap District Cabernet from Malk Family Vineyards. This is classic Stags Leap Cabernet all the way with flavors of cassis, accented by chocolate, vanilla and spice. It is 100% Cabernet sourced from Griffin vineyard which is adjacent to the famous Fay vineyard (whose wines sell for over $100 a bottle). The case production on this gem is small at 450, but worth seeking out when it hits our shelves.
My last standout was a Merlot from Coho Vineyards in Napa Valley. You read that right, I said Merlot. Sourced from the famed Michael Black Vineyard in the Coombsville region of Napa, this wine is stacked with flavors of plum and blackberry balanced by a nice acidity and silky tannins. This is not your Sideways bashing Merlot! Fans of Cabernet Sauvignon should not be afraid to seek this out.
Over the coming months, be sure to pay extra attention to the California section of your favorite ABC store as these wines begin to roll in. We are confident that you will enjoy these selections as much as we have enjoyed discovering these for you.
