DIY Moscow Mule & 3 Simple Variations

Florida is hot in the summer. By the time September rolls around, the kids are back in school and people have been too hot for too long. There’s nothing quite as refreshing as a Mule – a Moscow Mule, that is. It’s a crisp, refreshing drink, and is super easy to make for a party or after long, September day.

It’s also infinitely customizable. With only four ingredients, it’s basically a Vodka Sour topped with ginger beer. But this simple cocktail’s creation changed the course of cocktail history.Screen-Shot-2016-08-11-at-10.12.13-AM-1024x732.png

In the 1940s, in a scene right out of a movie, the owner of a small, struggling vodka company named Smirnoff met a pub owner whose ginger beer wasn’t selling either. As the story goes, they combined their wares with a lime in a copper mug (manufactured by another struggling company) and gave it with a catchy but meaningless name. The drink caught on, and so did the liquor fortifying it.Screen-Shot-2016-08-11-at-10.12.26-AM-1024x732.png

Since then, the recipe itself hasn’t really changed at all.

To get your own drink started, gather sugar, fresh limes, vodka, and ginger beer (you can order these using Shipt!), and get your copper mug ready!

Squeeze half a lime into a copper mug filled with ice. Add two ounces of vodka and up to one ounce of simple syrup to taste. Top with ginger beer and garnish with a lime wedge.

The recipe is also quite versatile. Substitute in any liquor to make other classic drinks, or muddle mint and berries of your choice before you mix to make a Garden Mule. You can also swap out the citrus and soda to make other classic drinks.

These refreshing cocktails include the:

Vodka Collins (use lemon and top with soda water!)

French 21 (use lemon and top with Champagne!)

Vodka Smash (muddle mint, use lemon or lime, and top with soda water!)

If you’re hosting a party and want to make all the cocktails beforehand, the Moscow Mule is a perfect choice. While your copper mugs chill, juice some fresh limes and heat up some water to make simple syrup. Once it comes to a boil, measure one cup of sugar into a bowl, and add one cup of water to it. Stir until all of the sugar has dissolved. It’ll stay good for about a month in your fridge, so don’t toss it out after the party!

Measure three cups of lime juice and five cups of vodka into a pitcher. Add simple syrup to taste, and throw in some ice. When the party is about to start, pour into individual mugs and top with ginger beer.

But you’ve been going, going all summer long. We suggest a moment for yourself. Sip a cocktail by the pool. Dig your toes in the sand. Go do something that you actually want to do.
