Espolòn Añejo X Tequila

In a market laden with aged tequilas, it’s rare to find one that’s been aged longer than three years. You’d also be hard-pressed to find one that’s even aged for five plus years, or one that sits at a $99 tag price.

Espolòn Añejo X Tequila checks all three of those boxes, however, and it’s wowing tequila lovers across the world.

Even if the tequila inside wasn’t memorable (which we promise, it’s the complete opposite) the beautiful, handmade bottle is something to pay attention to. It’s ink black and matte, reminiscent of and paying tribute to an old Mexican form of art called Barro Negro. It was popular hundreds of years ago, but was brought back to admiration in the 1950s.

Artist Jose Guadalupe Posada helped create that style of art for Espolòn’s bottle, harkening the recently commercialized “The Day of the Dead.” Mexicans celebrate their belief that death is a new beginning, the entrance into another life, by celebrating The Day of the Dead (if you haven’t seen the sugar skull costumes for the past four years, check them out; those are a reference to The Day of the Dead.) Posada chose to feature Ramón the Rooster honoring the souls of the deceased while skeletons eagerly watch as the souls of the dead walk into their new life.

As usual with all Espolòn Tequilas, their liquid is produced from 100% Weber Blue Agave. People love Espolon because it’s big and bold, with a rounded out mouthfeel and complex offering of aromas and flavors. It typically leans towards full-bodied and this expression is no different. It has a smooth texture, with prominent flavors of roasted blue agave, sweet pineapple and citrus, spices and vanilla. The finish is long and pretty spiced. It’s a stunner because it’s got the classic elements of classic tequila, with many more layers depth and complexity (courtesy of the thorough aging). Again, tons of rich vanilla, touches of baking spice, particularly nutmeg, and white peppercorn join notes of cocoa and baked fruits make this an awesome fall sipping tequila.
