Mulled Wine

thinkstockphotos-605750836Our cold spells seem to be over here in Florida and though we’ll miss the opportunity to wear one of three sweaters we own, there is something undeniably comforting and cozy about chilly air. For one, hot drinks. They warm you up right down to the bone. But when you add wine into the mix, it brings on a new level of flavor. Mulled wine might be the best way to capture the remnant of winter before we move into spring.

Below is a foolproof recipe that will have you wishing winter never ends!

1 bottle (750mL) Red Wine (try Dalliance Red)
3 cups Apple Cider, unsweetened
1/4 cup Brandy (try Vendome)
1/4 cup Honey
1 tsp Ground Cloves
1 tsp Ground Nutmeg
Cinnamon Sticks
Star Anise
Orange
Cranberries

Heat wine, cider and brandy in a large pot over medium heat. In a separate pot, place cloves, nutmeg, 4 sticks cinnamon and 4 star anise. Toast for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Add spices to wine. Let cook for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally but do not let boil. When the honey is dissolved and the mixture is warm, it’s ready to serve!

Ladle wine into glass mugs and garnish with cinnamon sticks, star anise, sliced oranges and cranberries. For added presentation at parties, add these garnishes to a punch bowl filled with your mulled wine.
