New organic Syrah from France, Domaine des Remizieres

I am thrilled to see the wines from Domaine des Remizières back in select ABC stores; this domain crafts some of the world’s finest Syrah, certainly one of my favorites, and quite possibly best value ever with the Cuvée ‘Particulière’ priced at $19.99 and the Tête de Cuvée ‘Christophe’ at only $27.99!

The 30-hectare domain is currently owned and managed by Phillipe Desmeures and his children Emilie and Christophe, using organic practices under a newly created category (2007) called HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale), High Environmental Value, which is the highest of a three-level certification.

The vineyards are located in the appellations of Saint Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage and Hermitage.

The vines for the Cuvée ‘Particulière’ and Cuvée ‘Christophe’ are both planted on steep hillsides composed of clay and limestone, with an average age of 45 years for the ‘Particulière’ and 70 years for Cuvée ‘Christophe.’

Barrels.PNGThe 2014 Cuvée ‘Christophe’ was aged for 15 months in oak barrels, 70% new oak and 30% one year old barrels. The wine received a score of 90-92 points by the Wine Advocate. It will pair best with grilled or roasted red meats, duck confit, game and aged hard cheeses. Decanting for an hour before serving is recommended.

The 2014 Cuvée ‘Particulière’ received 89 points from the Wine Advocate: “It’s a classic Syrah from this estate and offers notes of plums, black raspberries, licorice, spice and subtle oak. These give way to a medium-bodied, fresh, balanced Syrah that has ripe tannin and terrific purity of fruit.”
