When most think about aging wine and it getting “better with age,” they think red. But in fact, some of the world’s most age-worthy wines are white wines, especially those made with Riesling. I recently had the pleasure of tasting through a handful of German Rieslings with Sophia Thanisch, owner of one of the most storied properties in the Mosel whose Doctor vineyard Rieslings are world-renowned.
We began with her base wine and finished with one of her flagship bottlings from the Doctor vineyard. All were superb. Then came the surprise. “I have one more for you to taste,” she said, and pulled from her cooler a half bottle of 1997 Riesling Doctor Spatlese. Nothing about this wine (its color, flavor intensity, or acidity) had the markings of a wine twenty years old. It was superb; a testament to both Sophia’s winemaking and Riesling’s ability to age when done right.
And Sophia does Riesling right!
ABC currently carries seven of her wines, including two from the Doctor vineyard. The real bargain in her portfolio, though, is the Villa Thanisch Old Vines Riesling, one that she made exclusively for ABC. For less than $15, it hits the Riesling high notes, with racy acidity and a touch of sweetness. If you love sushi or spicy food, then this is the wine for you. Next time you visit your favorite ABC, ask for a bottle of the Villa Thanisch. You won’t be disappointed!
