My own personal reaction was, “Wow!” Besides my predilection for wine, I’m a gin lover from way back. But this was something different, something unique and something oh-so-good.
I’m talking about Principe de los Apostoles Gin from Argentina, which was rated “The First Luxury Gin in South America” by Decanter Magazine. What makes this gin so distinctive is that it is the only one whose key botanical is yerba mate, which is the national drink of Argentina. Other botanicals include eucalyptus, pink grapefruit, peppermint, juniper and coriander.
All ingredients are organically grown and harvested in the village of Los Apostoles, and distilled in small batches in 19th century pot stills in Mendoza, with individual macerations of each botanical.
Los Apostoles Gin is the inspired creation of Renato ‘Tato’ Giovannoni, the charismatic and acclaimed No. 1 mixologist in Buenos Aires, as well as being a painter, singer, football player and artist. His bar, Floreria Atlantico, is rated by Drinks International as one of the top 50 in the world. Should you step inside the flower and wine shop entrance to the bar itself, which is below street level, you might find your “aha!” moment with one of these cocktails —Perfect Serve: 1.7 oz Apostoles Gin + 0.8 oz Cynar; fill with premium tonic, garnish with fresh eucalyptus.
Corazon Tano: 1.7 oz Apostoles Gin + 0.4 oz White vermouth + 1.7 oz Fresh pink grapefruit juice + a dash of Campari; garnish with pink grapefruit peel.
Apostoles G&T: 1.7 oz Apostoles Gin; fill with premium tonic, add fresh grapefruit juice, garnish with thyme and pink grapefruit peel.
Principe de los Apostoles Gin was rated 94 by The Tasting Panel and is now available at ABC Fine Wine & Spirits.
