I am quite the fan of Heavy Seas Brewing out of Baltimore, Maryland. I enjoy their year-round brews, and I love their Uncharted Waters series. What follows are my reviews of two such beers and a new Partner Ships collaboration brew.
I will start with one of the newer beers from Heavy Seas, Partner Ships Hoppelbock. This is an aggressively hopped doppelbock in tandem with Troegs Independent Brewing. This beer is deep amber in color and comes in at 8% ABV. On the nose, I get a wonderful bready/bicsuity malt aroma. The first sip follows the nose but is well balanced by an assertive hop profile. There is a lingering hop characteristic, but this brew is not overly bitter. As the beer warms, the malt profile shines more as the hoppiness fades a bit. Overall, this is a well-balanced and delicious beer.
Plank IV is a Belgian style quad aged on four different types of wood. The woods are poplar, cherry, Jamaican allspice and Cuban cedar. This is a hefty brew coming in at 10.5% ABV. Brown in color with ruby hues, the wood and alcohol make themselves known before first sip. The nose is full of spice and booze. Upon taking a sip, raisins and other dark fruits are at the forefront of this beer, which finishes with a spicy, boozy characteristic that is a trademark of traditional Belgian quads. A solid interpretation of a Belgian classic that is perfectly suited to cap off a night of celebration.
Possibly my favorite of the Heavy Seas portfolio is Siren Noire. As I’ve noted before, I am a huge enthusiast of bourbon barrel aged stouts. Siren Noire is just that with some chocolate thrown in for good measure. This gorgeous brew with deep black color sits at 9.5% ABV. Chocolate and bourbon dominate the nose which is a lovely combination. The chocolate is noticeable up front while bourbon and coffee accentuate the finish of this beer. A fantastic barrel aged stout at a wonderful value. Not often will you find a beer like this under $10.
Heavy Seas offers a large number delectable brews. I recommend picking up a 6-pack of one of their year-round offerings or a handful of bombers from their Uncharted Waters and Partner Ships lines. Cheers!
