Trick or treat!
If you find yourself throwing a party to just hang out with friends this Halloween, we have wine for you! Check out our spooky wine labels such as the Ministry of the Vinterior Messenger Cabernet Sauvignon or make things even more interesting with wine and candy pairings. Yes, wine and candy pairings! I’ve put these possibilities together for your enjoyment.
Dark Chocolate (the real stuff)
Zinfandel, Port, Petite Sirah, Malbec
Rich and bold, dark chocolate needs a wine that won’t fade into the background. A wine with plush, dense flavors will suit it well.
Dark Chocolate with Mint or Fruit Fillings
Australian Shiraz, Napa Cabernet Sauvignon
Australian Shiraz is well known for its signature eucalyptus characteristic, which matches nicely with mint chocolate goodness. A rich, jammy Napa cab will also pair well- especially with fruit fillings.
Merlot, Grenache, Pinot Noir, Sweet Reds, Port
Fruity and not too tannic or bitter, these wines will pair well with the elevated sweetness of milk chocolate in a way that a more robust, tannic wine would not.
Lollipops, Gummy Bears, Sweet Tarts, Candy Apples
Moscato d’Asti, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Chenin Blanc (Demi sec Vouvray)
The lychee and fruit cocktail flavors of Moscato make it a perfect contender for fruit driven candies. Riesling and Chenin Blanc also offer fruity characteristics with a slightly acidic backbone that stands up to tartness.
Sweet Riesling, Gewurztraminer
Wow! Really bold and spicy flavors going on here… Let a slightly sweet wine with intense flavors tone them down a bit without fading into the background.
Kit Kats, Wafer Candies, 3 Musketeers
The crisp, airy nature of these candies pairs well with a light Pinot Noir that has subtle notes of toasty oak.
Butterfingers, Caramel, Toffee, Coconut
Buttery Chardonnay, oak aged red (i.e. Cabernet Sauvignon, Rioja)
Toasty oak will mimic the buttery, toasty quality of these types of candies. You can also try certain kinds of barrel-fermented/oak aged Viognier.
Pinot Noir, Gamay (Beaujolais), Rosé
Bright cherry, strawberry and pomegranate flavors will mix well with these candies, and the light body of the wine won’t overpower the candy either.
Sparkling Wine, Pinot Grigio
Think fun, light and airy with a hint of sweetness.
Raisinets, Nutty Candies, Reese’s
Banyuls, Tawny Port, Sherry
It’s amazing how much the flavors of these wines and candies mimic each other. Pair them for the ultimate match.
By no means is this list strict or all inclusive. There’s a myriad of opinions and options out there to choose from. Ultimately, you are the judge of your own palate. Drink what you want, eat what you love, enjoy the company you keep, and it all goes well together. When in doubt, sparkle it out. Bubbly goes with everything! Cheers!
